What is a solar return?
Once a year the Sun gets back to the exact ecliptic longitude it held at your birth. That instant is the solar return. The Sun takes roughly 365.2422 days to go round the zodiac, not a tidy 365, so the moment almost never lands at the same clock time as the year before, and it is not quite the same thing as your birthday. Astrologers cast a chart for that instant, the solar return chart, and read it as a preview of the year: its moods, its subjects, where the attention goes. Your own new year, in other words, and it does not fall at midnight.
The birth chart is fixed. It is the sky at the moment you were born and it never changes. The return chart is rebuilt every year for the moment the Sun comes home, so the Moon, the planets and the rising sign are somewhere else each time. Astrologers read the two together: the natal chart for what does not change, the return chart for the twelve months in front of you.
Why the moment drifts from your birthday
The calendar rounds the year down to 365 days and pays the missing quarter-day back with a leap day every four years. The Sun keeps no such calendar. So your return creeps later by almost six hours each year, then jumps back a day when a leap year lands, and over a lifetime it wanders between the day before your birthday and the day after. Two people born on the same date can have returns hours apart, occasionally a full day, depending on their birth year and time.
The calculator does not round any of this. It searches for the instant the Sun's longitude matches your natal value to within a few seconds of arc, then shows that instant on two clocks: your birth city's and the one on the device you are reading this on. Born in Sydney, living in London, you get both, because the return is one worldwide moment that simply reads differently in different places.
Your birthday is not your solar return
The birthday is a calendar convention. The solar return is an astronomical event. They sit within a day of each other, which is close enough for a card and not close enough for a chart, because the return chart's rising sign and houses depend on the exact minute and place. The other thing to clear up is prediction. A solar return chart does not say what happens. Astrologers use it to sketch a mood and a set of emphases for the year, where the attention gathers and what the heart is after, and the choices stay yours.
You may also have heard that flying somewhere for your birthday changes your year. Relocating the chart really does move its houses and ascendant, which is why some people book the flight. The Sun, though, gets back to your degree at the same instant wherever you happen to be standing. Relocation redraws the frame. It does not move the picture.
How to read your solar return chart
Start with the rising sign of the return chart, the sign on the eastern horizon at that instant, which astrologers read as the tone of the year. Then find the house the returning Sun lands in. The houses are the twelve areas of life a chart is divided into, so the Sun's house says where the year's attention goes: work, home, relationships, learning, rest. Those two placements are the headline. Everything else is detail.
After that, the Moon's sign, which is the part this calculator reads for you and which astrologers take as the emotional weather. Then any planet sitting close to the return's ascendant or Sun, which gets read as a theme of the year. You do not have to decode all of it. A few good questions about the year ahead get more out of a return chart than a line-by-line forecast, which it was never built to be.
Reading your solar return Moon
Where the Sun gives the year its headline, astrologers give the Moon its weather. The sign the return Moon falls in is read as what you reach for over the year, comfort, adventure, depth, recognition or company, and how you deal with whatever turns up. The water signs lean tender and inward, the air signs talk it through, the fire signs want to do something about it, the earth signs want it solid. None of that is destiny. It is a way of naming the undercurrent. The calculator works out the Moon's exact sign and phase at your return instant and puts the reading for that sign under your result.

How this calculator works
Enter your birth date, your birth city and the year you want. The birth time is optional. With it the return resolves to the minute; without it I assume noon and flag the result as good to about a day. The city sets the time zone your birth is anchored to, including whatever daylight saving and offset rules applied back then, which is the part most people get wrong doing this by hand. The whole calculation runs in your browser, so nothing you type is uploaded or stored anywhere. The positions come from astronomy-engine, an MIT-licensed ephemeris library. Rounding to the month would have been easier, and I did not want to.

When is my solar return?
On or within a day of your birthday. The Sun's trip round the zodiac takes a bit under six hours longer than 365 days, so the moment lands later each year by that much and jumps back a day whenever a leap day intervenes, which is why it can fall the day before or the day after. Pick a year and the calculator gives the date and time to the minute, in your birth city's time zone and in your own if they differ.
Is a solar return chart the same as my birth chart?
No. The birth chart is the sky at the moment you were born and it never changes. A solar return chart is the sky at the moment the Sun gets back to that natal position, so there is a new one every year and each looks different, since the Moon, the planets and the rising sign have all moved on. Astrologers read the return chart on top of the birth chart: one describes the year, the other the person having it.
Does location matter for a solar return?
Not for the moment itself. The Sun reaches your natal degree at one instant everywhere on Earth, so where you are standing does not move it, only the clock you read it on. Where place does matter is the relocated chart: the rising sign and houses depend on the horizon at that place, which is why some astrologers travel for their birthday. The calculator does not cast relocated charts. I show the instant in your birth city's time zone and, when it differs, in your device's, and leave the houses alone.

What does the solar return Moon mean?
The Moon is the fastest thing in the chart, changing sign every couple of days, so its sign at the return instant is the part that varies most year to year. Astrologers read it as the emotional tone of the year: what you reach for when things go wrong, and what counts as enough. A Taurus return Moon reads as a year wanting comfort, a Sagittarius one as a year wanting room. The calculator gives the reading for yours. It describes a mood, and a mood is not an event.
Do I need my birth time for a solar return?
It helps, but the calculator works without one. With no time it assumes noon, and since the Sun moves about a degree a day the return instant can be off by up to a day either side, which the result flags. A day of slack can also push the Moon into the neighbouring sign. Where the time matters is the full chart: the rising sign and houses depend on it. The date and the Sun's degree you get either way.
How accurate is a solar return calculator?
For the instant itself, to the minute, given a birth time. The calculator takes the Sun's position from an ephemeris library and searches numerically for the moment it returns to your natal longitude rather than rounding to the birthday, and the search runs in your browser, so nothing you type leaves it. The Moon-sign reading is another matter. It is what astrologers say such a year feels like. Treat it as a prompt rather than a forecast.
