What is your “big 3”?
Your big 3, sometimes written “big three”, are the three placements astrologers look at before anything else: your Sun sign, your Moon sign and your rising sign. Any one of them alone is a thin sketch. Together they narrow things down enough to be interesting, which is why people trade them like a handshake: “Leo Sun, Scorpio Moon, Gemini rising” says more in six words than a Sun sign manages in a column.

What the three signs stand for
Think of them as three depths. The Sun is the core identity and what you get up for, the person you are turning into and the reason behind most of what you do. The Moon is the inside: what you feel underneath, what soothes you and what you need before you can feel safe. The rising sign, or ascendant, is the outside, the first impression and the reflex you have when something new turns up.
When the three agree you tend to read as consistent and easy to know. When they pull in different directions, say a fire Sun, a water Moon and an air rising sign, they describe the gap between who you are, what you feel and how you come across. Neither arrangement is better. Both make a recognisable person, and the second one makes for better stories.
Do you need your exact birth time?
It depends which of the three you want. Your Sun sign comes from the date alone, and your Moon sign is usually clear from the date too, since the Moon stays in one sign for two to three days at a time. Your rising sign is the exception: it changes roughly every two hours as the earth turns, so it needs the time and the place, and there is no way round that.
So the calculator is plain about the gap. Big 3 vs big 6
Once people have their big 3, the next thing they ask about is the “big 6”. It keeps your Sun, Moon and rising and adds three personal planets: Mercury for how you think and talk, Venus for how you love and what you value, and Mars for drive and desire. The big 3 draw the outline. The big 6 add the shading round the edges.

The degrees on this page are real. They come from the same class of positional model that professional astrology software uses, so the sign and exact degree of each placement are astronomically accurate. What those signs mean is a different kind of claim. Astrology is a tradition several centuries old for thinking about yourself, and it is not measured science. What is your big 3 in astrology?
Your Sun sign, your Moon sign and your rising sign. The Sun is the core of the thing, who you are and what you get up for. The Moon is the inside: what you feel when nobody is watching and what you need before you can relax. The rising sign is the outside, the style you lead with before anyone knows you. Astrologers start with these three because one sign on its own describes a twelfth of everybody.
Do I need my birth time to find my big 3?

What if the Moon changed signs on the day I was born?
It happens. The Moon moves about thirteen degrees a day and changes sign every two to three days, so some birthdays fall on a crossing day. When your Moon sits near the boundary the calculator flags it, and your exact birth time settles which side of the line you were born on. On most dates the Moon stays in one sign from midnight to midnight and the date alone is enough.
What is the difference between the big 3 and the big 6?

Yes, though it takes more than a shared birthday. Two people born on the same day usually share a Sun sign and often a Moon sign. The rising sign is the filter: it changes every couple of hours, so matching all three means being born at a similar time in a similar place as well. When it does happen, people report an odd, immediate familiarity, like meeting a cousin nobody had mentioned.
